Next Up

Our skies are blue again and that makes us very happy. Life was very slow for awhile, but sometime here at the end of summer it has gotten extremely busy. It's been long enough, a lot of the family is starting to come into town to see the parents again. Though we have to wear masks going into all the stores, our bubble just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Time for the government to take a big step back and let us be responsible for our own safety once again. Most of the people we know don't intend to live this way forever.
Binding all ready for hand work

It felt amazing to put the last few stitches in the Peachy Cameo quilt last night. Then, this morning, I got up early to put the binding on. Wowsers, the light was so pretty! I'm not generally a morning person, so this was an unusual thing, getting to fully experience the beauty of a quietly beautiful new day.
String quilt ready for the hoop!

I decided to put the string quilt in the hoop next. Not the quilt top at the top of the list, but it was the one that could be sandwiched and quilted in quick window of time late last week. And it feels right. I'm loving the idea of getting my hands on this particular quilt once again!
Love the energy to this one...

Also, I think it will be very therapeutic to hand quilt as the decisions will be minimal. Just pick up the needle and go. Stitch, stitch, stitch....
Lots more of these to sew!

I also managed to squeeze in a couple hours last week with the hourglass units that ended up being abandoned from another project. They aren't the prettiest things, but I enjoyed the mindless chain piecing so much. Was very sad when life got in the way and my time had to be redirected elsewhere.

We're all packed up and about ready to leave for a week or possibly more time? away from home. Husband finally got the job stuff figured out after many delays {story of our lives}, and now it's time to go take care of the job away from home. There will be people here in our home so don't think I'm announcing an empty house to the world. Hoping to squeeze in a fast trip to the Oregon coast during the time away too. We'll see. Got my handwork bag all prepped and ready to go. Of course! Thankfully I checked it again last night because I had managed to forget the 'proper' color thread for an applique project. Hmm... I wonder if that was a sneaky way to go visit a quilt store? It's so crazy. When I think back throughout the year, I can only think of maybe three times I've actually been inside of a quilt store. How sad is that?

  1. I've gone through withdrawal because of fabric shopping. But, I've come to appreciate the diversity of my own stash. I went to a quilt store just before the big close down. I didn't buy anything but I couldn't stop thinking about a couple of pieces. So, I called and ordered it and it came postage free. But, other than that all I've done is go to a local shop for thread. It looks like you're going to have fun being away and stitching.

  3. I haven't been in a quilt shop all year! of course I have no quilt shop here so it isn't like I have been depriving myself of anything. We continue to stay home as in the high risk groups - have fun on your away time!

  5. I just read and reread your last three posts. YOu sound much more upbeat in this one. Maybe getting away is a good thing about now...wish I could go with you, LOL. Love seeing all your flimsies emerging from your totes. Yes, it is nice to revisit and reimagine the possibilities with them. Anyway, have fun and be safe where ever you go!

  6. Definitely agree with your thoughts about the government letting folks take back the decision making about their own personal safety. If you happen to travel through Yamhill County on your way to the Oregon coast I highly recommend a visit to Boersmas in McMinnville, the best quilt shop I've ever shopped at. Some great little restaurants and coffee shops nearby too. Enjoy your getaway!

  7. Have a great trip! We're planning on leaving the beginning of next month. It's been forever since we've seen our kids & grandbaby, not to mention my brother & his family. It's amazing how a little bit of personal freedom can uplift the spirit. Enjoy the "new scenery". Love your string quilt!

  8. Enjoy your trip. The string quilt looks very good, I've made a string quilt using very bright fabrics but love the colours in yours. Maybe I make another, I have enough scraps in the box.

  9. I love hand piecing, it's what has gotten me through many months locked at home. I'm in Canada, and we just lifted (July) the toughest restrictions, school has opened and for months our numbers were extremely low (95-110 cases in Ontario a day) now, school and all restrictions have been lifted (we ALL wear masks, it's illegal to go anywhere, any store or even to work without a mask) and our cases are jumping like crazy with the 20-40 age group.
Why? ....because that group went back to Uni and collage...and partied, didn't follow the rules and just ignored the whole message....typical.

So now we have 400+ cases a day...and it's getting worse.

I personally don't mind the restrictions if it means we will not be in a nightmare when flu season hits. To watch American news and to see all those people fighting to not wear a simple mask is obsured to us here, watching Trump make fun of those that choose to use them is shocking. Seriously...WHAT is the big deal?! It works. It saves lives, and it's why some countries have low numbers.

Sorry for going on, but I just wanted to give my perspective from another country watching our neighbour to the south shocking case and death numbers and not understanding why wearing a mask is worse than watching someone die from this virus!?

  11. I hope by now you are enjoying a wonderful get away! The string quilt looks fun. I've been to a quilt shop several times lately but always wearing a mask and social distancing. Also trying to use my stash but never seem to have the right fabrics!

  13. You sound much better and your quilting mojo is back. I don't think it ever left. How delightful that you can make a trip. And that family can visit. It's been hard staying inside all the time. Hopefully we can go for walks again soon now that the air is clearing. And at least we have our houses.

  14. Ive been falling behind my blog reading. Boy it sure is nice to have some fresh air. We got away for a week to the mtns. It was much needed.
I'm all about personal responsibility too. I don't feel like masks are helping anyway.

  17. Glad to hear you can get away for a bit, enjoy! Loving your string quilt, it's restrained colour combo and I look forward to seeing what you quilt in those alternate squares. Yes, a strange year for all of us. I have been up & down with my quilty enthusiasm & focus, but the sun is shining today, this afternoon's bookclub was great after so many months of not meeting... and we have our grandchildren for a sleepover... so it's all good here in NZ.

  19. Enjoy your time away, and I hope you come home refreshed. Here in Melbourne we are in 'stage 4'lockdown, wearing masks is a must. All of our retail shops, pubs, hardware shops, beauty shops, etc are closed, online orders have taken off in a big way. Cafes & restaurants can only serve takeaway. We can't go further than 5kms from home, to grocery shop & exercise, and we have to have a travel permit from our employer if we are working in an essential type business and can't work from home.
Our covid numbers have dropped, and hopefully in another 3 weeks the restrictions will be eased a little more.
I haven't been inside a patchwork shop since Feb this year.
