I Have a Finished Quilt Top!

Well, I did it. The Scrap Basket quilt has more borders whether it needed them or not. It all boiled down to (me) thinking it looked unfinished, so that is all that matters. The choices for border colors seemed a little iffy with this particular quilt, but I really wanted to extend the red out through the borders.

First I added on more of the light green to finish out the look of the sashing. At first I thought I could skip that border or even go with black, but that green seemed to frame my blocks the very best. So interesting that I ended up using more of the same green that is in the basket handle. You know the one that I almost threw away so many years ago because it was on the, shhh... ugly side?

More and more I am realizing that some of the oddest fabrics will be the ones that jump into a quilt and make things come alive. I'm not sure I will ever be able to say with a straight face anymore that 'I would never use that fabric in one of my quilts!' How could I possibly know what my future quilts might need?

A little closer look
This quilt has been an interesting journey from the start, making my template and scrapping my basket together from the scrap bin. Then, deciding it needed some playful applique and maybe even some freehand leaves. Being unhappy with the wall hanging size and making a plan to up-size my quilt. lol I still have to chuckle that my blocks turned out so very different from the way that I first envisioned (I was thinking they'd be more like this). All in all though, I'm very happy with what has happened here and I wouldn't have it any other way. In my opinion, it's turned out to be bright, fun, whimsical, a bit vintage looking, and very, very scrappy. I used up a lot of older odd bits of green out of my stash and mixed in some of those new fat quarters I bought in Portland last fall. What's not to like?*wink (Let's not talk about the lime green mom!)

  4. I love this quilt top - everything about it!! The green and red borders were the perfect choice. Seeing that you did your blocks differently in this quilt you can still look forward to doing them the other way in another quilt.

  17. Just love it! The red border works, and those blocks are just wonderful with all those fabrics. I agree that sometimes the very thing you think would never work in a quilt actually may be the fabric that makes it sing. Congratulations

  19. Years ago, I subscribed a monthly scrap bag. I received all sort of fabrics, some I would never buy, and nevertheless they are those with the best result at the end ...
    Congrats on your finish !

  20. Whoo hoo! It looks super, Audrey! Love the red border, and I really like that green border too. They both tie everything together nicely. This top is a winner!
p.s. I still can't quite wrap my mind around how your blocks are different - I can see they are, but I don't know how you got there! Besides, I think they better suit this quilt than the other blocks would.

  24. An interesting journey in the making of your quilt. The basket center is my favorite part of the quilt. Your surrounding blocks did turn out different than your envisioned thought but it so suits the overall look.

  26. It looks fantastic, Audrey, and I agree with some of the others -- an interesting journey too! The red fabric border ties together with the centre block perfectly. Maybe a black binding will finish it off?

Those "other" rolling stone blocks sure look great too -- not the kind of temptation I need right now!
