Working on My Rolling Stone Blocks

For some reason I decided I was in the mood to tackle my Rolling Stone blocks this week. I think it's the colors I was wanting to play with because I've enjoyed working with these fabrics so very much.
Chain piecing
Having several projects going at once always gives me an opportunity to jump around and mix up the colors I'm working with from day to day or week to week. Even if (for example) a couple of my projects have blue in them, I will have different combinations of colors together with that blue which is refreshing and kind of 'wakes' me up if you know what I mean.
Trying to stay organized with my piecing
Chain piecing is definitely something I try to do as it seems to burn through the piecing so much faster. I have a tendency to get in a zone though, so I have to be sure and stay very organized with my book right in front of me or a finished part (or block) for quick reference.
Rolling Stone parts
I love seeing the parts start to come together even if occasionally I start to question my fabric combinations. The thing with scrap quilts is that you never really know until the end when you put it ALL together. The plan for these blocks involves putting them with my Scrap Basket centerpiece. It's all still a bit iffy as to layout, but the idea would not leave me alone.. so onward ho!
The wrong colors
These fabrics and colors seem so whimsical, vintage and modern all at the same time--a great project to work on right now as the weather wants to be gray and gloomy right at the moment. I just realized today that the center squares for the Rolling Stone blocks were cut out of the various colors instead of the background blues. *groan... That's me. Wasting good fabric because my brain refuses to think straight when I'm trying to be creative. What's up with that anyway?

  2. I need to have something in front of me as a reference as well otherwise who knows what I will end up with.

  3. yes if I am machine piecing it is chain piecing if possible - goes faster doesn't it.

  4. For what it's worth, I have had SO many things go wrong today, I say we call for a "do over" ...if only we could! sigh. Maybe you could convert them to tiny tumblers? Just a thought. ;)

  5. Chain piecing is always a must and a reference always needs to be close by. I know you'll come up with a whole new project for those center squares! Have fun.

  6. Rolling Stone blocks are on my To Do list. I'll enjoy watching your progress for now. Sorry I haven't been around lately. Having carpal tunnel issues though doing better now. I don't think I've ever made a quilt without some sort of piecing or cutting mistake - just part of the process!

  7. Sounds like another wonderful adventure - can't wait to see how it turns out. And yes, I work on several projects at the same time as well - I think the cross pollination of patterns & fabrics adds to the final product.

  8. Maybe your creative self is telling you to use different colour squares for your centers...

  9. Chain piecing is definitely recommended, I have loved it ever since I started machine piecing (which is not that long ago). And that is one of the things I love about scrap quilts, the whole process of finding out how it will look eventually.

  10. Isn't that the best reference book ever? I have it and I love it! Your blocks look good so far, and it looks to me like they will go nicely with your basket center. I too need a reference when chain piecing sometimes - I've chain boo-booed! Not Fun. Yes, I also do the multiple projects-at-one-time thing. I blame it on a "low threshold for boredom" myself. hee hee!

  11. Chain piecing makes things move along at a cracking pace ...although about half way through I start feeling like I may be doing it forever !
