Tiny Tumblers From the Scrap Basket

Do you ever feel the need to just cut and sew with minimal decision making effort that could (possibly) muck up the sheer enjoyment of it all? I gazed around my tiny little quilt room after I came home, looking at my lists and the incomplete projects thinking 'meh', feeling kind of restless and just wanting to play.

Plus, I think I needed a jump start. You know how it is. Somehow summer snuck away when my back was turned and the cozy, warm fall colors were calling my name louder than any of the UFQ's cluttering up the counters.

I dug out the tiny tumbler pattern that I've been promising myself would be made sometime in the Summer (yeah right, still wondering which Summer that was?). The template is so small there was no need to dig through the stash and waste precious moments of indecision there. Which is what I wanted anyway.  The scrap basket is much more fun when you're feeling the urge to just blow something out. lol

I ended up making the smaller of the Tiny Tumbler patterns, but of course I had to make it a smidge bigger so it would properly fit the table where it will eventually be displayed. I played around with the setting of the tumblers for a few minutes and then thought 'why bother?' I personally love the look of thrown together scrappiness, which is good because somehow a couple rows got mixed up when I was sewing them. I am so prescient sometimes it scares me.*wink

  3. I know just what you mean about a "no thinking" project - the decisions do slow us down a lot! This is a lovely little quilt and fun to play with your fabrics isn't it?

  4. Hi Audrey,
I often feel like that! What I do is cut squares and strips out of the scraps as and when I can, so I have bags of squares and strips in all sorts of sizes. When I feel like you did, I just go dive for a bag of either squares or strips and just begin to piece. No cutting required! Love your little tumblers. How big are they?

  6. It's a cutie Audrey. I have been enjoying the pleasures of using tiny scraps too instead of cutting a little corner off a big piece of fabric. I laughed at the use of "meh".....I tried to stop my boys from saying it but it has become part of the general vocabulary, and I know entirely what you mean. Just read your About Me too, I totally get you there as well. X

Yes! If there are too many decisions to make I get paralyzed. Plus, it's fun to be surprised by how it turns out. I love your tumblers! It's going to be just a charming little quilt. :)

  10. I love thrown together scrappiness, too! Love your tumblers. I have a tumbler template and cut out a total of one block and haven't gotten back to it. One of these days! You are so organized with your patterns. Good for you!

  11. It is very sweet! I had a heck of a time lining up those little blocks, so for me, it was a frustrating quilt top to make. Glad you found a fun easy project.

  15. Is it hard to get the tumbler pieces lined up so that things come out even?

  18. A very cute tumbler mini, Audrey! I can relate to setting rows a particular way and then messing them up in the sewing together process... and sometimes I like it even better!
